Miss Sweet's Saloon Part XVIII - Fist or Cuffs

Briefly, time stood still as she watched her past collide with her chosen path in a bloody brawl: her traveling companion Jake and the obtuse cowboy both at odds in her heart as well as her bar.

With Jake's wide back blocking her view, Miss Sweet couldn't tell if the ghost from her past was quaking in his boots or thirsty for blood. She also couldn't decide which she would prefer. Thoughts flew through her head like a band of wild horses, trampling both her lust and tears.

As the stalemate ripened in front of her, a snort drew her attention to the bar and one sorry looking cowboy lounging in the dark corner observing the drama. Was that a smirk on his battered and bruised mug? Ire pushed out her shock. She was surrounded by arrogant cockstrutting cowboys!

Just as the boot shuffling and predatory circling started, she whipped out her trusty pistol and silently thanked ol' Mister Valance for losing his belt buckle for the good of her pantaloon holster!

Steppin' between the two red faced men, she brandished the gun in the air.

The obtuse cowboy sputtered something of the likes, "What in the darn 'ell you think your doing?!" which was just enough distraction for Jake to come in from the side and lay him out flat with one solid punch to the jaw.

In fact, the hit spun him on his high heel boots and landed him face down next to the bar.

But even though the stranger didn't know what hit him, he was back up in less than a minute glaring through squinty eyes and trembling with rage.

Miss Sweet took the time to spread her feet and settle into a nice solid stance before leveling her shiny metal barrel directly at his chest.

"I'll thank you kindly to leave my virtue to my own discretion, sir." Her smile was at odds with the threat between her palms as she recalled the very first time she said those words to this man.

Would his memory spark too?

Miss Sweet's Saloon Part XVII - The Obtuse Stranger

At the sound of Miss Sweet's sputtering, the cowboy raised his head from the dog at his feet and focused a pair of piercing baby blues right on her... heaving bosom. She felt for sure those eyes would burn right through her once he recognized the past in front of him, but as his gaze finally slid up to her her face the cold indifference shattered her heart in an instant.

He didn't know.

How could he not know, his darling Sweet Pea standing right in front of him?

Sure, she didn't look quite the same as that naive tomboy of her youth. Her chest had finally grown to match her wide shoulders, her hair had gone wild and long, and there were more shadows in her eyes. But that's what grownin' up will do to a person.

But for all her mental justification, she couldn't stop the splintering in her chest as one more sliver of her heart died.

Frost iced over her eyes, 'cause she damn sure weren't crying, as the obtuse cowboy settled into the bar and ordered a drink.

With a sharp nod of her head, she left him to his oblivious musings and returned to her bubbling still. And to think about that choice she made so long ago...

Just then, Jake appeared at the backdoor muttering something about a local head case over at the porch. But her rock of a cowboy stopped short at the ice in her desolate gaze.

Wary of her infamously sharp defensive tongue, he approached silently. She tracked him with quickly melting eyes. By the time he had his arms around her, she was stiff as a board and dripping tears.

Her uncharacteristic display of womanly emotion was so alarming that Cowboy Jake resorted to the only way he knew to guarantee a smile from his pretty miss.

Claiming that silent trembling mouth, he devoured her lips and the salty tears coating them. Forcing her to come back to the good in her life and forget whatever pain had glazed her eyes.

His grip was tight all around, 'cause he knew she would fight initially. She just wasn't the type of woman to appreciate man handling. But she quickly quieted and returned his rough affections as her tears trickled to nothing.

A cough in the door way interrupted them and Jake turned his head to see the man of his nightmares... her first love.

"Excuse me, Sir." The obtuse cowboy in the door way began, "But I don't think the lady appreciates your attentions."

Jake released Miss Sweet and shoved her behind his back, entirely certain she would NOT stay there for long.

His drawled reply was heavy with long unrequited anger. "Well, Cowboy, I do believe those sound like fightin' words..."

Miss Sweet's Saloon Part XVI - The Familiar Stranger

With business at the Saloon a bit slow, Miss Sweet reckoned it was the perfect time to be restocking the homemade stuff.

Keepin' one ear on the front door, she made merry in the back kitchen mixing and boiling and testing it all for just the right about of kick in her shine. Seems she got so caught up in her concocting, she never did hear the cowboy sit down at the empty bar til she noticed her pet mongrel was no where to be found.

Curiosity dragged Miss Sweet right straight out to that lonely slab of polished wood and the sight of the finest piece of... cowboy bent over and pettin' her darling bitch.

Who in the devil could that be?! Weren't no man that... tight in this hear town that weren't already in her stable *cough cough*

Miss Sweet's Saloon Part XV - Gus' Ghosts

Turns out Miss Sweet weren't quite so easy to track as Gus the Naive Cowboy had hoped. Who woulda thought an innocent young woman could get into so much trouble and still be alive?!  (Present company excepted, of course.)

After his suspiciously easy escape from a live skinnin', Gus set out to the nearest town inquiring 'bout his missing Sweet Pea. Mostly all he could rustle up were ghost stories; a gypsy seductress taming wild horses and wild men, always leaving before anyone noticed the safes were cracked. Made him wonder if the distant sound of horses following him in the trail weren't just his own ghost story.

Speakin' to the womanfolk you'd be sure she was an evil witch casting a spell on all the men around, striking them dumb with satan's lust. Hear the menfolk tell it and she was a wild queen among women, easy with the horses, mesmerizing with her swaying hips, and as sure a shot as any quickdraw around.

Gus wandered for what felt like months listenin' for any stray word to lead him to his long lost Sweet Pea. But with each saloon story and church gossip he could feel his heart hardening, slowly erasing the young and feisty Sweet Pea he loved all those years ago and replacing her with a stranger. Gets a man to thinkin', did he ever really know that girl at all?

Now if'un he had been utilizing all the smarts the dear Lord gave him, he woulda realized no body stays the same that long. Gosh darn, even his own damn self weren't the same naive young cowboy from those memories. Life makes a person tougher or makes 'um dead. And he weren't dead yet. So you can bet young love ain't in the cards anymore. But, of course, that obtrusive male pride were making a mess of things and had his dander all up in a fuss about his Sweet Pea not being quite so sweet anymore.

Just you wait until he finds her, 'cause I reckon eventually he's gonna stumble across her lonely saloon. See that's what happens when you stay in one place for any extended length of time. That's right, the past comes to find you. And then, wel, you just gotta make do with the future, if you can see that far ahead.

Miss Sweet's Saloon Part XIII - Gus's Escape

So the strange night progressed, and Gus found himself seated around a fire with a band of ruffians ordered to shoot him at the first sight of cowardly fleeing. Apparently it is much easier to threaten your victim into submission than to actually have to bind them with precious rope.

The initial fear of a live skinning had settled down into his gut as a hot mean knot. His brain as finally functioning again without a bling haze of anger.

He was clearly outnumbered, so that meant he wouldn't be fighting his way out of this particular predicament. Nope, this cowboy was going to have to be wily.

So he set about acting yellow bellied and ball-less, hunched over himself at the fire keepin' his eyes down. But his ears, no, they were perked. He was intently listening to all the conversations around him as dinner was cooked. Mighty poor last meal too, canned beans and stale bread.

He could feel the scoundrel's eyes hard on his nape more often than not. As the leader of the thieves, he seemed to be the most conniving and the most likely to see through Gus' little act.

After eatin' the scoundrel started telling tales. Tales of a woman wild as the horses she tames and the men she entertains.

Gus refused to believe these ribald memories were of his long lost love. Sweet Pea just… just wasn't that kind a girl. Was she?

He lost himself for a time in his thoughts of the young cowgirl and her mysterious rejection of him and her whole life. And the seed of doubt was planted, right next to that hot hard knot of fear in his gut.

Night lengthened into cold darkness as the fire shrunk to embers and the band of thieves bedded down.

He curled into a ball next to the residual heat and continued the charade of a beaten and broken cowboy with nothing left to live for. But he had a new burning purpose now. That seed had grown, fueled by his angry fear, and he was determined to find Sweet Pea and demand answers.

Who knows which of these outrageous stories are true, for the telling around the campfire this night was wicked and hot and passionate and raw. But one thing was certain, his Sweet Pea has been here with these men. And now he had a few good clues as to where she might have gone and he was determined to track her down as soon as he got out from under the scoundrel's thumb.

And then there he was, bending over Gus, and giving him a sharp kick to the ribs.

"Best be gitin your rest. Dawn will be bringin a very important day for you, your last."

He seemed to get an inordinate amount of humor out of that comment and walked a few paces away to settle down as sentry to his prisoner.

Gus struggled to keep up the weakling act but anger was boiling inside him again. Concentrating on breathing he focused on the beat of his heart… the rhythm of his breath… the scrape of boots and blankets.

Camp was settling down and he began to realize, not all the cowboys were sleeping alone. But for the life of him he couldn't remember any women in this group.

He was cold sleeping alone, body heat would have been a wonderful thing that cold night... but then he heard the heavy breaths and grunts to accompany the obscene images forming in his brain. Shock overcame him as he realized what he lay in the midst of and he barely registered a body slipping in tight to the scoundrel.

Dully he realized this would be his chance to escape, while the randy thieves were distracted.

And so he waited, listening intently to the sounds of pleasure given and received, and slunk off into the night on a chorus of slaps and moans ignoring the niggling feeling that this escape came a might too easy from a conniving scoundrel.

Miss Sweet's Saloon Part XII - Gus's Last Meal

Bewildered at this mysterious tale of love and loss, Gus struggled to keep up with the mood of the crowd and the three men who currently held his life in their hands.

Rock and Hard Place seemed to have loosened their hold on his arms just a bit and distraction showed clear on their faces as they stared at his bared chest scar. The "u" shaped mark had never brought him luck in the past, and was in fact a painful memory of all he had lost. The day he knew his Sweet Pea had his heart.

He had bartered with the blacksmith, cowboys don't beg, to act farrier to her stables on his own. If'un he was going to be a master blacksmith one day, he needed to know how to ply his wares. And whilst shoeing one of her feisty mares he found himself paying more attention to her rear bent over the feed bucket than the balancing horse in his hands.

Next thing he knew he was on his back in the barn relearnin' how to breathe. His eyes opened to her bent over him with a strange mixture of laughter and concern in her eyes. The type of look a woman gives a cowboy when she cares about him and his idiotic antics.

Sittin' up into her arms took the edge off his lovestruck haze to the reality of warm blood soaking through his shirt. With shaking fingers he unbuttoned the sticky cotton to reveal the mark of a horse-shoe on his chest, a permanent testament to his distracted heart.

He couldn't breathe right for a good three weeks after that particular incident and had to wrap his chest every morning just to think about earning his keep. Sure as rain at a funeral he couldn't strike an anvil any better than a wet-behind-the-ears youngen and was delegated to bellowing the fires and fetching and carrying. But despite the demotion and the daily grinding pain, Doc said something about a cracked sternum, his step was easy with the memory of the care in her eyes.

She was everything a man could want, sweet and pretty, gifted with the horses and smart enough to keep a man's mind sharp. He thought he had found the meaning to life--wild land and a good woman. But it turned out it was the woman who was wild and he ended up watching as she ran out on him and his heart.

The blade across his neck brought him back to the present. But with his heart lost, he didn't see much reason to fight for his life.

The scoundrel loudly cleared his throat from his position behind Gus and the restless crowd of thieves quieted.

"That's right, men. This here is The Naive Young Cowboy of our darling Sweet's stories."

Shouts rose again as Gus tried not to struggle and draw his own blood. Had this cowpie just said Sweet Pea's name? HIS Sweet?!

The two bulls on his arms held him tighter as the scoundrel moved back in front of him to look him straight in the eye and laugh, a creepy slightly cracking laugh that did more to raise the hair on your arms than illicit any sort of joy.

"There! I see it, that glint in your eye. You know that girl that broke your heart? Well, we here got the mighty fine privilege of turning her into a woman." A sneer twisted his face bringing his waxed mustache into a diagonal slash across his face. Hoots and hollers resounded around them, cat calls echoing in the night air.

Stunned, Gus's brain refused to register the brash statement. Denial pervaded his thoughts as the scoundrel drawled on.

"And we grew mighty fond of her too. Miss Sweet, why she is everything wild about the west. And the way I see it, you hurt that woman. She came to us with shadows in her eyes that had a strange resemblance to you, Mister Cowboy." This statement brought ominous low boos and hisses from the surrounding throng.

"And when she left us, it weren't completely gone. No, you still stain her heart. And I don't reckon I like that none at all." The knife slid from his neck to trace down his chest and the scar.

"Mayhaps if'un she knows you ain't ever gonna accept her wildness then she'll come back to us…" The pondering tone to his speech sent a chill down Gus's spine. At least the knife was no longer at his neck but this weren't going no where he wanted it to go. Truth or not, this conniving scoundrel believed what he preached to this crowd of thieves.

Taking this slim chance to speak for his life, Gus asked, "And what would convince her?" Though he already feared he knew the gist of the answer.

A nasty glint brightened his eyes as he answered, "I reckon that scar on a nice soft piece of leather would do the trick. A much easier gift to deliver than a dead body tied up with ribbon."

Gus fought not to let the fear show on his face but he could feel the blood rushing from his head to his rapidly beating heart.

The scoundrel's grin grew wider at the sight of his pale face. "But I'm feeling like you should get yourself a last meal before the ultimate sacrifice for your lady love. So join us. Eat drink and be merry and we will tell you stories of our Miss Sweet before we cut you out of her heart like a rotten eye from a potato."

Saturday Serial - Miss Sweet's Saloon Part XI

Gus was caught between a rock and a hard place, at least that is what he nicknamed the two beefy bulls holding him up by his arms. Add a thieving scounrdel eye balling him front and center and that about summed up his day. Bull shit.

What's a cowboy to do when it doesn't look like he's gonna see another sunrise? He shoots off his mouth in place of his gun, of course.

"So, if'un you ain't the devil, then wh- omph." The rock on his right jabbed him in the stomach, cutting him off and folding him in half. When Gus regained his breath and righted himself the scoundrel was showing off those crooked white teeth again in a nasty grin.

"Best not speak before you're spoken too, boy." He tilted his hat toward the group of thieves surrounding them. "Those two bulls holding ya aren't exactly the friendly type." The hands encircling Gus's arms tightened.

"In fact, they been in a mighty bad mood for neigh on 3 months now." This statement incited a variety of grumbles and sighs from the crowd. "Guess we all been feelin' pretty mean just about that long."

"But you're about to change all that, Cowboy. With a little entertainment." The scoundrel paced a tight circle around the trio, stealing Gus's hat and spinning it in his hands as he spoke. Just another insult to add to the disgrace of being unmanned in public when this group of ruffians kidnapped him from the local saloon.

"Now my little group of wandering souls here doesn't know what I know. And since I'm a betting man, I reckon' about half will be in the mood to be givin' you thanks. But the other half, those two boys holding you included, well… guess its a good thing you're gonna have lots o' friends to watch your back."

He flipped the cowboy hat back on Gus's head and stood back, boots wide and hands braced on his hips. "Now as for my feelings. Well, I find myself torn right down the middle. You might say right through my heart." The scoundrel's eyes narrowed and the pause in his tirade seemed to fill up with the weight of suspense as the crowd scrambled to understand what bush he was beating around.

Gus was sure it wasn't going to be pretty for him no matter what. He was at the mercy of a roving band of thieves, and those types of men were not known for an abundance of that particular quality.

Being outgunned meant he was little help to himself, and it was not like the townspeople were going to come lookin' for him. He hadn't made it a point to be friendly the last few years, in fact he had tried his best to be ornery. It had worked, too well. And now he was gonna die alone.

Restless muttering rippled through the throng as the scoundrel’s hostile glare sweep the crowd. "Most of you have been riding with us long enough to share our grief of the last 3 months. Death didn't steal her away from us on his raging black stallion, but her absence aches just as much." This open wound spread silence throughout the camp, mutual breaths held in tight chests as the scoundrel approached the culmination of his speech - and Gus's fate.

"She was the bosom of our family. She sang our songs, kicked our asses and told us many stories." Rock and Hard Place tightened their grip even more as the scoundrel approached Gus, stopping just an arm’s reach away with a threat in his eyes.

"Stories of horses and men and wild blood." The threat turned into a knife as he raised his hand allowing the campfire light to glint off the metal and catch the eyes off all surrounding them.

"Stories of family and love and heartbreak." The knife lowered to point over Gus's heart and he struggled against the inevitable. Death was expected but torture, that was not his cup of chicory.

His struggling only brought the knife closer to graze against his skin as the scoundrel purposefully pulled it away, catching the cloth of his shirt and ripping it wide over his chest.

A old scar glinted shiny and tight in the bright light of flames. The scoundrel circled around Gus to reveal the marred skin to all who could see, eliciting a chorus of discordant cheers and boos, only to come up behind him and place the warm blade across his neck....

Saturday Serial - Miss Sweet's Saloon Part X

His head weren't the only thing pounding when Gus woke up surrounded by yards of cloth. The saloon had turned into a brawl with half-drunk patrons dusting off their fighting arms in just about every corner. Except, of course, his. He was, apparently, ensconced in the midst of his buxom barmaid's embrace, both of them wedged up against the wall and out of range of stray bottles or fists.

Now you would think a man would appreciate the pleasant awakening when so many more unpleasant outcomes could have easily come to pass, but Gus wasn't called grumpy for nothing. His mood was tepid on an average day, throw in having his manhood crushed in damn near public and he was more ornery than a skunk in a bees' nest.

With a growl he shook the remnants of unconscious fuzz from his head and struggled upright, despite the protests of the barmaid beneath him.

"Mister Gus, you mustn't get up." She wrapped her arms around his waist in an attempt to keep him on the floor between her legs.

She rested her head on his shoulder and whispered in a scared voice, "Don't give the scoundrel a reason to touch you again. He surely meant to take advantage of you." Her words broke off as she gasped and tightened her arms around his waist.

As if her words had conjured him, the scoundrel stood not two feet before them reveling jagged white teeth and bloody knuckles.

"You gonna finish what you started?" the scoundrel taunted. "Or do you prefer the safety of a woman's skirts?"

He cocked his head to one side and twirled his greasy mustache as he added, "You sure do look pretty surrounded in all that pink lace." The sentence trailed off in a slithering of sound that crawled under Gus's skin and had him struggling to stand.

The scoundrel laughed and muttered insults to the group beginning to gather around them. "Yearling! So weak. Can't even stand on his own two feet. Least when I knock him down, he's got a soft place to land!"

After considerable effort, Gus stood shakily with his head still spinning from lack of air. The scoundrel was still posturing a few feet in front of him, goading the crowd of bar patrons and distracting them from the mounting danger.

Playing to his disoriented state, Gus feigned additional weakness allowing his head to drop so that his hat covered his wandering eyes. The scoundrel's men were circling the brawl-exhausted townspeople, strategically standing behind them or blocking the exit.

He raised his head and straightened his spine. Ignoring the increasingly vile and creative insults spewing from the scoundrel's mouth, he stared him dead in the eyes and waited.

Acknowledgement slid through those black eyes and with one nod of his head, the scoundrel's men drew their weapons and fired into the ceiling effectively holding up the entire saloon.

"This here's a stick up," the scoundrel bellowed. "And if'un you be getting any ideas about being a hero, I'll ask ya to think on what is more important to you… your gold or your life." And the gun came down to aim directly into the center of Gus's chest.

The two cowboys remained motionless as the scoundrel's men fleeced the townspeople of weapons and valuables. Once stripped of anything of worth, the crowd was herded tight into a corner and surrounded. Whimpering could be heard along with the rustling of clothing and an occasional angry murmur.

The unease was tangible. Robbery was very common out in the wild west, but the size of this particular theft took balls of a gigantic size. And it was lookin' like Gus was going to be getting up close and personal with those balls.

There was a strange glint in the scoundrel's eyes as he held Gus at gunpoint, a calculation perhaps. The evidence of his thoughts soon became apparent with the next set of words to drawl out of his mouth, "This young man right here is going to make sure none of you kind townsfolk forget that your lives are more valuable than gold. He'll be the first one I shoot." Suddenly there were two more men at his shoulders, grabbing hold of his arms with both hands above and below his elbows.

"Just remember, the devil don't take coins," his lips spit to reveal those jagged white teeth again, "I do!" And on that last taunt the scoundrel's men grabbed their loot and filed out of the back of the saloon dragging Gus along behind them.

Saturday Serial - Miss Sweet's Saloon Part IX

Blue eyes glared into black as the cowboy and the scoundrel stood nose to nose.

The saloon grew quiet with anticipation, only a stray giggle or grunt coming from the table of strangers' laps.

It seemed the two men were looking to wait each other out. A good ol' fashion staring contest the likes of which no one had seen since the age of ten. But the scoundrel, holding true to his name, didn't fight fair.

Nope, that conniving bastard used his mind as a trusty second in this duel of wits (and perhaps his pants were whispering in his ear as well). For, as time slowed to a crawl and grit watered unblinking eyes, a giggle burst forth from the cowboys' lap and the bountiful piece of flesh perched there.

The cowboy held the scoundrel's mocking stare as anger began to heat his face and neck. He watched as a nasty smile curved the mustache and scared lips in front of him. From the corner of his eye he could see the scoundrel's arms moving and judging from the increasing amount of giggles coming out of his lap, he could guess where those thieving hands were-all over his current choice of prime womanflesh!

He fought against breaking the steely eyed gaze to look down at this blatant insult. With gritted teeth he wrapped one arm tight around the barmaid's waist, bringing her sideways across his lap, and swept the other down her side from neck to knee in search of the stranger's wandering hands.

The giggling turned to sighs as she succumbed to the pleasure to two pairs of strong hands tracing along her body. The cowboy's grip tightened as his free hand finally found the roving scoundrel's, high above her knee and entwined in her garter.

Their hands were camouflaged beneath layers of skirts and the press of the men's bodies, one threatening step from touching.

And still, the staring contest continued. It was as if to speak would be to incite greater violence than this childish masculine display of dominance and submission. To break the silence was to forego children's games and embrace men's games of blood and war.

The change came quickly. The cowboy attempted to break the hand beneath his barmaid's skirt. The hand feigned retreat only to surge forward with a step that brought the scoundrel's body in between the cowboy's knees. His oily black eyes twinkled and his teeth flashed quick and bright before he pushed through the bairmaid's skirts to clamp and his hand obscenely around the cowboy's manhood and squeeze.

The cowboy's eyes grew wide, glistening with outrage as his free hand came up in a nasty right hook. With that incendiary punch, the silence in the saloon broke with barmaid's screams, cracking jaws and wood. And the scoundrel's reciprocal head lock put Grumpy Gus down and out for what seemed like two weeks of unconscious bliss.

And so their goal had been achieved.

Miss Sweet and Mister Jake easily acquired the run down bar from the bank and set to putting it to rights. Their conniving clothes made an impression that day on the town.

Subconsciously, the display of finery, wealth and arrogance succeeded in shrouding them in a thin cloak of respectability bringing with it a new beginning for the heart-broken Miss Sweet complete with her first set of misfits, the quietly charming piano player thief and a ol' bitch with her pups.

Meanwhile, in a town not so far away, a young naive cowboy grew up into a cold cur of a man.

Funny how manipulative the heart is, especially on a fresh idealistic mind. That fistful of flesh twisted his thoughts into such a mess that his mental prowess was to be questioned. Of course, you would have to do that behind his back or you'd be liable to find yourself on your back along with a bloody nose.

Sure as the sun do rise every morning, he was cold as a spring creek and would flow over you just the same if you stood in his way.

Grumpy Gus was the name they whispered behind hands and into beers. He always had a scowl on his face and made a habit of staring down too curious children until they ran to cower behind their mother's skirts.

The townsfolk gave him his berth. They respected his space and his work. Tending to fire and hot steel all day etched thousands of tiny burns on his body and built massive callouses on his roughened hands. The smoke and liquor painted his eyes perpetually bloodshot with a hallow coldness that echoed the emptiness in his betrayed heart.

As was his habit, one night Gus was attempting to paint his eyes red and his heart black at the local saloon. A brave barmaid sat perched on his knee holding his beer while he held on to her more generous assets in a quest for oblivion.

His attention was wavering between the bounty in his lap and a raucous group in the corner. They appeared to be new to town and had managed to engage all the barmaid 'cept for the one shifting nervously on his lap.

There was a strangeness to them, an air of freedom that crawled right up under his skin and irritated his insides worse than Miss Pickering's mystery stew. What was with this group of riff raft, what business did they have in town?

As he pondered the intruders with his usual scowl and cold stare, the largest and oldest raised his head from the antics around the table and caught his eye… and held it.

And that is how he found himself grimace to grimace with a pock faced, low down dirty, hard hearted, wandering scoundrel...

Welcome to Saturday Serials

You may remember Mistress Sweet from past Saturday Serials as the protective Dominatrix.
But at Mister Valance's Porch she's Miss Sweet, owner of a cozy saloon and a broken heart. Below is her story.

Saturday Serial - Miss Sweet's Saloon Part VII

Miss Sweet isn't one to shy away from a challenge and seein' the faith Jake had in her to make their way in this new town, well that just strengthened her resolve. She WOULD be the leader of their tiny pack. Jake and the pups were her's now; her responsibility, her family, her home.

Revising her plan of action, she admitted to herself that no one would give a lone female the respect and authority she needed to lay claim to this here abandoned Saloon. Time for Jake to make good on his promise and play the role of leading man to this stereotypical male chauvinist western town.

With a flourish she unrolled their finest conniving clothes; layers of lace and petticoats for her and wool and satin suiting for him. They donned the finery with meticulous care making sure to appear of the mildly wealthy class. An air of superiority settled around their shoulders like a cloak as they donned the irreverent arrogance of wealth inherited. Anticipation glinted in both their eyes as they surveyed the results of their transformation and secured their meager belongs next to the bitch and her pups.

Miss Sweet mounted her prized stallion and Jake lead them by the reins into the heart of town.

What a sight they made; money perched upon money lead by the money man himself. The children were the first to approach, running circles around them and sprinting into town to tell their friends. Soon heads peeped out of windows and porches filled with bodies as the lurkers turned into gawkers and gossip spread faster than they could walk.

She feared their slow and purposeful parade was a bluff just about to be called when the Sheriff rode up to greet them. Let the twisting of truth begin.

"'Morning folks." He tipped his hat to Miss Sweet and turned his attention to Jake. "What brings you to our town?" His eyes are keen as he assesses their horseflesh, clothes and demeanor. "You lookin' to settle?"

Jake tips back his hat to gaze up at the mounted sheriff, the perfect amount of anxiety and excitement in his voice as he answers, "I believe so. Yessir. An adventure is what we set out for and I do believe we have found it here." Restrained enthusiasm pulsed beneath his skin as Jake looked adoringly up at Miss Sweet on her horse. She simpered sweetly in response, ducking her head and faking a lovely blush.

The Sheriff barely restrained his gauwf and Miss Sweet hid her smile behind a gloved hand. Their lovestruck adventuring rang frivolous to his ears as well? All the better to strengthen their plan to make an ill advised purchase of the run down Saloon. Young and in love with money to burn, who would begrudge them the safe little thrill of serving the locals music and drink? It's not like they were riff raft, there to badly influence the townsfolk. Nope, just too well off to know better and looking to play in the wild west.

With an unintelligible grumble, the Sheriff cleared his throat. "Well, let me be the first to welcome you to our town. An adventure, you say?"

Jake played up the haughtiness in his tone to compliment the excitement plastered on his face, the voice of young enthusiastic surety. "The abandoned Saloon on the outskirts of town has caught my eye. You, by chance, know who holds the deed?"

Suspicion clouded the Sheriff's eyes, "And for what reason would a nice young couple like yourself be wantin' to have anything to do with the ruckus of a Saloon?"

Here was Jake's time to shine. It was up to him to convince the Sheriff we were good people, god-fearin' and family-lovin'. With a glinting grin of pearly whites, Jake leaned into the Sheriff with a conspiratorial whisper, "Well out in the big cities, I've seen the most glorious of Saloons. Why! You wouldn't even call the Saloons 'cept they aint got no other fancy name for 'em. But the thing is, these establishments are no dirty shack. Nosir. Ain't no harlots temptin' a man to shun his vows. Just a lively piano and a steady flow of booze. Easy. And I'm thinkin' this town just might like a dash of easy. Least I'm hopin' so!"

After a moment to absorb that rousin' speach, the Sheriff shook his head and pointed off to the left of main street. "That there is the bank, and it be the owner of that run down shack you got such high hopes fer. Best 'a luck to ya and welcome to Blogsville."

"Thank you kindly!" Jake called after the Sheriff. With a quick wink to Miss Sweet he walked them 200 paces over to the bank and their new life.

Miss Sweet's Saloon Part VI - Settling into Town

They needed a plan of action. But her plans had always been of the moving kind. She just plain had no experience with settlin'!

Guess first point of business would have to be this here shelter they'd been squatting in. Might better see if'in she could find the owner and perhaps strike a business deal.

She weren't above sellin' her body if it suited her ways, but wandering tended to be easy on the coin. Truth, wandering didn't GROW the coin either, but when money came in it usually settled quiet and solid in her pocket. She wasn't without means, now she just needed to ferret out the way to stay in this here run down Saloon.

She leaned against the piano next to silent Jake, allowin' her eyes to wander over him as she pondered their next move.

Jake could head into town solitary like, but the local cowboys would be a might suspicious 'specially when he found the owner of the run down saloon and offered to buy it outright. She could easily envision that turning into an undercurrent of gossip that would not be conducive to a new start for either one of them.

They could play the part of a traveling couple, therefore protecting their own virtues. But that would leave the saloon unattended and provided no explanation as to why a lovely happy married couple would want anything to do with the riff raff a saloon would entice.

Her wandering eyes finally stopped on his. The patience in those dark blue depths soothed her anxious ruminations.

"It's lookin' like I'ma gonna have to sacrifice my virtue once again and head into town as the loose lady." She sighed and watched confidence in her plan curl across his face, smoothing out the wrinkles of his forehead and creasing the lines at his eyes. He had complete faith in her ability to be his new leader of the pack.

And now she just had to prove it...

Come back next Saturday when Miss Sweet heads into town!

Miss Sweet's Saloon Part VI - The Man and The Bitch

After so many years of wandering, Miss Sweet weren't sure how this stagnation would turn out. But she had learned a lot over those past years and most important was to listen to her gut. And the cramping in her stomach translated to a change in path, and had absolutely nothing to do with the can of refried beans they had found under the piano.

With a grand smile she surveyed her new home, squatter's rights and all. Grime coated almost every surface but the ones they had been dancing and sleeping on. Suspicious piles of fetid rot occupied various dark and musky corners. And the bitch and her pups curled under the bar with a brand new male protector leaning next to them.

Her attention turned to the usually silent Jake. A fairly new addition to her wandering cohorts, he had been riding with them for the last 5 months. Not one for many words, he didn't seem to participate much in the more riotous evening activities of the gang. He weren't no leech or such. Brought in just as much food and coin as the rest of them, just did it without fanfare.

She had a niggling suspicion she weren't the only reason he opted to stay behind with her. Last night he had unveiled a hidden talent and entertained them all for hours as he tickled the ivory. Now get your mind out of the gutter! He's a piano player, and a damned talented one. Sure, she ain't heard no one else play piano, but she had to believe that he sounded like an angel from heaven at that dusty bench!

His motives weren't all that important. He spoke the truth about her need for a man. The town just wouldn't accept a woman on her own. His presence would make settling a whole lot easier. And it weren't like he were after her virtue or any such thing. He had spent many nights warming her sheets just the same as all the men. And when he weren't warming hers, he was tangled up with one of the other cowboys.

Did you just gasp? Do you know how cold it gets in the desert at night? Don't matter one bit about your pride as a cowboy if'in your pet cock done near freeze off. And when you're constantly running from the law, well fire just ain't an option. Throw in some liquor and the only thing important is mutual satisfaction.

Sure, they had a few ruffians join their group and leave the next day, some with a fight and others with harsh words. Ain't no place in that group for judgement. They all were running from an empty noose somewhere. With that hanging over your head, pleasure is a gift no matter what form it takes.

Perhaps she mighta managed to get joined up with the only bisexual free love cowboy outlaws in the desert. But they are the roughest toughest meanest men you ever wanna meet.

And somehow she managed to get one of the prettiest ones to follow her. When he smiled, Jake sure was a pleasure to look at. But without the curve of his lips and wrinkling of his eyes, the hard cut of his chin and the intimidation of his unibrow would make any common man step back and guard his words. The cowboy could positively loom like a thundercloud at his extreme height.

Currently he was crouched down next to the strays, attempting to get his fingers bitten off.

Guess they needed a plan of action...

Miss Sweet's Saloon - The Fifth

So ended the childhood of a girl and began the wandering of a woman.

Pa didn't put up much of a fight when she saddled her favorite steed with bags, blankets and water. Determination glinted in her steely gray eyes, or perhaps those were tears. Either way, he figured it were time for her to go.

His girl couldn't be expected to stay in one place forever. She had wild blood. He might not be able to forgive her ma for leaving him, but he had made peace with his Sweet Pea's inevitable departure long ago. It was just the way of it. She needed to wander. And if it helped her see the true needs of her heart… Well, then he would be right here waiting when she was ready to hear the full truth of it. 'Cause those darling ears of hers were so stuffed full of cottoned confusion, that she weren't hearing nothing but what was already in her head.

So, he would stay put. Settled on the ranch with the horses. And be a solid rock in her sifting sands. And maybe one day both his girls would come back to him.

Shoulder's tight and heart guarded, Miss Sweet hugged her Pa farewell and rode off. She stopped only once to glance back at the ranch just starting to be enveloped by the horizon.

Squinting she could make out the silhouette of her Pa against the sunrise and turned away as a horse and rider galloped up to his side. Her naive young cowboy, she would bet. Her self shredded heart aching, she cantered away. Time to traverse the path from child to woman and ante up to just what kinda person she wanted to be.

That path was surely an adventure.

Miss Sweet learned real quick the wiles of woman proved more successful than the brute strength of a ruffian. With a wink and a smile she traded on her horsemanship skills for the teachings of a large hearted scoundrel. He showed her the glory of the gun and the satisfaction of good business. She grew to respect him for his conniving mind and his hardened heart that she was able to carve a niche into. Without words, he knew she were a different kinda woman but the judgement just didn't 'er come. Course, it's kinda hard for a murderous, lying thief to call names with any kinda weight.

They wandered together for quite a few years, random ruffians accompanying them at times, the numbers of their group rising and falling like the sun. He warmed the icy cage around her heart, and her bed as well. No matter how many bodies she invited under her sheets that night, his was always the one at her back.

Her spirit guide, he watched as she explored all the possibilities of what kind of woman she could be. He fed her voracious appetite for knowledge and sex, nourished her body and mind, and armed her for the day when they would split ways.

The time came when his pure blood wanderlust split their paths.

They traveled through a small town and spent the night in a closed up and rundown saloon. Their group of castoffs was small that night, with only 5 wandering souls accompanying them.

Settling inside, they were not so lucky as discover abandoned bottles of booze but there was plenty of space to rest and play. They entertained themselves with a dusty old piano, dancing on the rickety bar and just generally causing a ruckus.

'Course it were obvious to the townsfolk someone were in the abandoned building that night but it weren't so obvious to the rag tag band of wanderers that they weren't the only ones claiming that bar for shelter.

Halfway through the night, when most of the group were huddled together in a seven foot wide dog pile of sleeping bodies, a small noise brought Miss Sweet's head up. Extracting herself from the warm mass, she investigated only to find a nursing bitch and two pups.

Odd the way the mind works. You wouldn't think such a common thing would detour a wandering path. But the next morning Miss Sweet found herself reluctant to go. Sensing her hesitation, her mentor gave her a cocky half grin and didn't say another thing. No words were needed. This is where their paths would split. No hard feelings. Weren't really an abandonment, just a change in course.

Once the whole of the group got wind of the division of territory a lively conversation ensued. Wanders wandered, and not many were inclined to stay with her but one quiet man laid his pack down on the piano and reclined against the keys. At her questioning look, he shrugged and said, "It looks to me like if in your gonna settle into a town for a while, you just might be needing a man to keep up appearances." She smiled wryly at the truth of it.

And just like that, the hard hearted scoundrel that had been her partner and guide for years kissed her quick and fierce and rode off on her favorite stallion, which she didn't notice until way past noon. Scoundrel is right! Course, she chased him down that night and silently switched out her stallion for the mare she had been riding and left him to his wandering with her blessings.

And that, my dear friends, is how Miss Sweet's Saloon came to be… at least here in Wild West Blogsville, that is.

What? You think I left out some parts. *snort* Guess you're gonna have to ask then, and perchance I might tell ya or not. *wink*

Miss Sweet's Saloon - The Forth Part

Sweet's recollection of the first hearts she ever broke; her's, Pa's and a naive young cowboy's.

The tension at the ranch was something like the distant pressure of a fast moving storm. At first your neck hair tickles, and then the horses start to prance, until finally a sudden gush of air blows through and you get soaked down to your boots.

'S about the way it happened with her and Pa. The courtship with her naive young man was going along at a respectable pace. A few other cowboys were startin' to perk up and show competing interest. Then Pa had to go and blow her over on her 18th birthday. After that she took over on the raining on everyone's parade.

Ya see, her Ma hadn't been happy with just one man. Evidence enough were right there in the photograph and jewelry Pa had given her on her 18th birthday. He hadn't needed to speak one word of explination. The story played itself all out in front of her.

Gazin' on his sad face as he looked at the photograph she were reminded of that flash of fear that crossed his eyes whenever she got a little freindly with one of the cowboys. Seems she was bred to lust for unnatural things and he knew it. He knew she were gonna be a heartbreaker.

With her Pa's revelation, that is when she had begun to know, it just wasn't in her blood to be with one man. She'd had only one kiss, stolen deep within the stable walls, and even with that innocence newly stripped she had felt a strange longing for another solid body behind her to echo the strong cowboy holding her so tenderly.

Her Ma had gone and played herself between two men in two different towns. No other way to explain the three weddin' rings in her head. And with that blood in her veins, well, she could never be trusted to be faithful to a man.

Pained her to admit, it also 'plained a strange longing that she'd been skirting with her thoughts. The ache to be held tight between two men had been a plaguing fantasy ever since that second cowboy had shown up to compete for her affections.

But she figured there had been enough hearts broken in her family (but her convoluted logic just succeeded in breaking three more.) Darn obvious that Pa's heart had been broke by her Ma. So she weren't gonna give him the chance to see her follow in her Ma's footsteps.

'Cause she could feel her blood warming. She could feel those urges coming. And she might better just leave him with the memories of her as girl than she her as a woman and a reflection of her Ma.

In the midst of the whirl wind of first love and blossoming womanhood, Pa showed her the past. Destiny revealed with a photograph and three wedding rings and the assumption that her mother was a harlot and therefore, so was she.

Were for the best that she left that town.

Left her Pa, quiet and lonely on the horse ranch.

Left her naive young cowboy, angry and confused at her unexplained goodbye.

One word without no explanation was a dirty way to leave, but surely not as cruel as the truth. She loved him dearly, but one man was not enough. Weren't nothing to be done for it. No sweet honest God-fearing cowboy would tolerate her sins, and she certainly wouldn't ask it of him. No sir, he would stay pure and gentle and good in the arms of another woman who could give him all of herself, heart AND body.

And what would she do? Well, she would wander with her broken heart and tainted blood and perhaps like would find like.

See ya next Saturday for her return to present day...

Miss Sweet's Saloon - The Third Part

Pa's recollection of her broken heart is still clear as the day she was born 'cause, in a round about way, he were the one that broke it.

Ya see, she doesn't have many memories of her Ma. Just the typical hazy images and fuzzy feelings of warmth and tenderness. And it doesn't bother her none either. She has her Pa and the horses and life is good.

Well, it was fine enough until she started getting a little older and growin' up a bit. He can remember a time when his little Sweet Pea only had eyes for him, but then again he can remember a time when her Ma only had eyes for him too. Neither one of those times lasted.

So the grownin' up happened and sure enough she fell head over boots in love. A handsome young cowboy apprenticed to the blacksmith in town started making trips out in place of the ol' crippled farrier. And he sure did take longer to shoe those horses than ol' Jasper ever did too.

Season's passed and things progressed to the point of sick glowing puppy love on both their faces. It weren't nothing he could look at for any length of time without feelin' his stomach bunch up into knots and a start attempting to jump out his throat. Weren't the right kinda reaction for a man to have to his daughter's happiness, but it were the truth.

That young handsome cowboy showed enough brains to ignore the gossip about his Sweet Pea and get to pursuing her real serious like. So, Pa got it in his head that it was right time that she knew the truth about her ma and her blood on her 18th birthday.

He presented her with a paltry few of her Ma's things. A photograph of her Ma with a baby in her arms and a man at her side that was not Pa, and a trio of wedding bands.

Without him even opening his mouth that smart mind of hers put a couple of the puzzle pieces together. But with a twist of her thoughts she got it all wrong. And it's hard for a man to find the words to talk about stuff like that. Especially an old lonely cowboy speaking to the only woman he loves, his daughter.

So he took the cowards way out for a just a little while, and let her think that half a puzzle was the whole story. By the time he'd had a few drinks and gathered his balls back into his pants, she wasn't listenin' to his words real clear. She missed the love and heard only the ungodly taboos and the taint of her blood.

And that is when she got it in her pretty stubborn head that she wasn't worth the love of a good and decent man. Though where that puts her Pa, he's not sure.

He watched his girl with a hawk's eye after that, sure she was setting up to do something life changing. And sure enough the light started to fade in his Sweet Pea's eyes, rubbing off like a lonely bull on a stump.

But that boy, he never did notice. Til it was too late, of course. By then she was as cold to him as to any man and appeared to watch with frosty eyes as she shattered his heart on one warm windy day in May and left them both with empty hearts and empty homes.

Miss Sweet's Saloon - The Second Part

She wasn't raised in the usual way. At least, it weren't usual for the rest of folks.

For her, it was just normal to saddle up with her Pa and ride with him everywhere. First, with his strong arms right tight around her little girl body and latter stride for stride on her very own mare.

Dresses were for special occasions like church and weddings, and britches were just a might more practical for riding and tending the ranch all day.

Course she didn't know she was doing it all wrong, living that is. Didn't know cause they didn't have much need to leave the ranch and see what everyone else thought was right.

In fact, she didn't see her first neighbor 'til it was time to sell the first ever foal she done raised and broke. Pa said she needed to learn how to "Sell it" and she didn't have too much trouble.

Pretty soon Pa preferred that she do the selling. Said the cowboys were a bit less tight with their purses when she did the talking. And after a fashion she did notice that they didn't haggle quite so hard with her, but man did they do it longer!

Her Pa could wrap up a sale on a mediocre foal in twenty minutes but some of those cowboys would hem and haw for a good hour over a sturdy stallion is she was doing the showing. But in the end, she always sold her horse. Pa said they just liked to hear the sound of her voice fer as long as possible.

Pa tended to be within spitting distance when she was "Selling it" and he had cause to express that distance only a few times. The wet splat always got the ornery cowboy's tone of voice back in the range of proper. Unfortunately, there was no distance that could calm the storm of gossip from the women in town. And Pa would ne'er dare spit at a lady.

Just as sure as there would be a group of dusty cowboys waiting for Sweet and her Pa to show their wares, there would be a gaggle of skirted women waiting for her to turn her back for their verbal barbs. She ignored them for the most part, not understanding half the insults and not caring about the rest.

But every time a cowboy would show undue interest in her, the remarks would become especially loud and shockingly cutting. Mostly about her missing Ma and some outrageous story about her Pa being shunned for another. That one was the hardest for her to ignore.

In her mind, her Pa was the strongest, smartest, kindest cowboy around. Weren't no reason she could come up with in all her 17 years for any woman in her right mind to have hightailed it away from him.

Now, you must be thinking that 17 might be a bit long in the tooth for a virgin of the wild west, but her years were young to the ways of the world outside of the ranch.

Her Pa did his best to shield his precious Sweet Pea from those vicious tongue and roving eyes cause he knew she had a secret deep inside her. Her Ma's blood ran through her veins, wild and strong and... hungry. He feared the day when she finally bloomed into her mother's daughter.

See ya next Saturday for a Miss Sweet's first taste of love...

Welcome to Saturday Serials
Miss Sweet's Saloon - Part I
Mistress Sweet is well known here at Saturday Serials, as the protective Dominatrix, but where does a big bad leather wearin' mama go to relax? Well, she steps back into the old West and onto Mister Valance's Porch. The porch is a cozy gathering of like minds, rockin' chairs and wet whiskey. Just watch out for the soup. Over there she's known as Miss Sweet and owns herself a cozy saloon and a broken heart. Below is her story.

Tending bar has always been a pleasure for her. Caring for the rowdy cowboys and loose women fit her just fine. No body judged here, and if they did she had a pistol on her hip that could shut a man up right quick whether the shutting came from the barrel or the butt. She didn't tend to killin' her customers but if they got outta line, well, she put then back in it right quick.

Course that kinda action from a lady sure earned her a less than pristine reputation around the townfolk, but she didn't let it bother her much. There was a reason she was out here in the wild west, secluded and alone... 'cause that is what she deserved. A woman like her would never earn the love of an upstanding cowboy, and so she would never try... again.

With a sigh, Miss Sweet gave the gleaming wood of the bar top one last swipe and settled against it with a hip. It was early enough in the day that the customers were light and she could afford to reminisce, no matter the pain that always followed her return to reality.

If only she had kept the truth locked tight and quiet in her heart, she would still have her handsome naive cowboy and the life every prairie girl dreams of.
