Lets play three guesses:
1. So this Jess MACKENZIE character is a normal human who got involved in the supernatural world?
2. Jess is a magic user?
3. Jess is not quite human and in denial?
Bound to be one of those. Haven't read this book. I like the sound of it being a paranormal read but it also sounds like it might be a little predictable.

Southern Arcana as in the South US? Have you read the Magic .... series by Illona Andrews? Set in Atlanta, Georgia.
